personally, i think that the majority of the problem tends to be stemmed from the pedestrians themselves. in my neighborhood there are sidewalks throughot on both sides of the road. however, the majority of the people walking seem to think it's better to walk on the street. i understand that some serious walkers & runners agree that there is less hock on the ankles and knees if you stick to asphalt. but, i'm continually seeing throngs of people casually if not lackadaisically strolling the streets themselves and not in single file, which may be safer, but still not the best choice. so as far as spending more money for better pedestrian infrastructure, i'm unsure as to whether or not that would be the best idea for safer roads, streets & highways in Memphis. it would be good to have better bus stops that actually have shelter for those using public transit in general, however spending further monies on projects such as trails and the like seem more of a waste of tax money, especially when there are so many other more important problems within our city and Shelby county. alas, these are just the observations of a common citizen whose lived in either the city of Memphis or within Shelby county limits for over the last 20+ years. perhaps there should be emphasis more on proper conduct when on the road, whether it be bicycle, vehicle, or foot in our schools, community centers and yes, even church & home?

That's an interesting idea. The potential drawbacks that I see are: 1) It can get pretty dry in the summer and I'm not sure how deep the river channel is then, and 2) the Wolf kind of meanders around the city. It would not be a direct ride, that's for sure.

Thanks for the comments and ideas Chris!

I think the City of Memphis should utilize the Wolf River as an alternative to street traffic by offering commuter boat rides to locations up and down the water way. A person could travel from downtown to Shelby Farms via a relaxing, scenic river ride. Cities like Boston already have programs similar to this.
